Say NO to Diabetes!

Once a rarity, today more than 29 million people have diabetes, and 86 million have pre-diabetes. Diabetes is a very deadly disease ~ once you have it you’ve opened the door to kidney disease, heart disease, and stroke. The solution may seem ridiculously simple: we can tackle this disease with a knife and fork! Fill your shopping cart with these foods to keep diabetes at bay:

Avocado: May help put the brakes on metabolic syndrome ~ a cluster of risk factors, including high blood sugar and diabetes.

Lentils: Those who eat more legumes, particularly lentils, are far less likely to contract the disease. By substituting lentils for more starchy, simple carbs like rice, potatoes, and bread, the protein and fiber in lentils keep blood sugar more stable.

Strawberries: The abundance of polyphenols in strawberries, and even cranberries improves insulin sensitivity. The antioxidant polyphenols make cells more responsive to insulin, which leads to better blood sugar levels.

Oats: Fiber is key in the battle against diabetes. In the April 2017 issue of Scientific Report, Finnish scientists found that something called indole propionic acid, produced by bacteria in our gut in the presence of fiber can nix the development of diabetes. Whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice also qualify. Make that long cooking grains, folks, not the instant stuff in packages!! Shop in the bulk section of your local health food store, and make sure your grains take longer than 20 mins to cook ☺
