Just in from researchers: Fitness levels are more accurate predictors of survival than traditional risk factors!

Most adults over age 70 have multiple risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. The most exciting news is that the total number of risk factors is NOT helpful in predicting a persons’ future health. On the other hand, knowing how FIT a person is can be a predictor of future health ~ good news for those of us who enjoy working out, or riding, hiking, running, gardening, etc. A recent study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 68th Annual Scientific Session, March 2019, stated just that.

Researchers analyzed records of more than 6,500 people, ages 70 and older who had undergone an exercise stress test. These people were tracked for just under 10 years, with data revealing that those with higher fitness levels significantly increased longevity. In fact, the most fit individuals were more than twice as likely to be alive in 10 years when compared with the least fit. An interesting aside: People with zero risk factors were as likely to die as those with three or more risk factors. It appears exercise is the key!

Lead study author, Seamus P. Whelton, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine said this: “We found fitness is an extremely strong risk predictor of survival in the older age group ~ that is, regardless of whether you are otherwise healthy or have cardiovascular risk factors, being more fit means you’re more likely to live longer than someone who is less fit.” Keep on moving!!!
