Want to live longer? Just in from a UK study is that if you want to outpace the grim reaper you may want to quicken your step! This study examined the impact of walking pace/volume on all cause mortality. Researchers studied mortality records for 50,225 individuals in England and Scotland who were interviewed about their walking program.

It turns out that average-pace walkers have a 20% lower risk of all cause mortality than slower pace walkers. Brisk walkers achieved a 24% risk reduction! Regarding CVD (cardiovascular disease) it appears walking at an average pace is more beneficial than a brisk pace, with risk reductions of 21 – 24%.

As to cancer mortality authors theorized that overall volume was more productive than exercise intensity.
