Bellevue Nutrition | Coffee: The #1 Antioxidant!

Your new motto may well become “A coffee a day keeps the doctor away”! If you’ve been anxiously cutting back on your coffee consumption I have some great news. Coffee, badly maligned for the past 25 years, has now been given a clean bill of health! In years past coffee was classified as a possible carcinogen; at the very least depleting the adrenal glands. New research shows that coffee is now considered to have more antioxidants than red wine OR green tea, and also may help fight disorders from cardiovascular disease to depression! Here’s the scoop:

Three to five cups a day is associated with minimal health risk and may confer benefits.

A New York times article credits it with: reducing tinnitus risk, increasing driver safety, cutting melanoma risk, amping up workouts, surviving colon cancer, increasing health and longevity.

The World Health Organization recently announced coffee may protect against cancer. In fact, strong association has been made between coffee and lowered mortality!!

Three to five cups a day seems to be the marker to protect against cardiovascular disease.

Studies in Canada, Europe and the US correlated higher coffee consumption with protection against Alzheimers disease. In fact, new research suggests drinking more coffee may lessen the damage of alcohol on the liver.

A Harvard study that tracked 50,000 women for 10 years found that those who drank four or more cups a day were 20% less likely to develop depression. Coffee drinking may boost the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine, one of our ‘’feel good’ hormones.

Coffee is also the #1 source of anti-oxidants in the US diet ~ because Americans drink so much of it, more so than red wine or green tea.

One caveat: listen to your body. If it doesn’t feel good to drink three to five cups a day, don’t! If you feel jittery, cut back to one to two cups. If it impacts your sleep, try making the last cup of the day between 10 and 12 am.

To your health!
